Bear Saftey During Recreating

Many bear attacks take place when humans surprise bears. Realistically, many attacks can be limited by following some rules. It’s a good idea to follow some basic safety precautions, listed below.

  • Do not hike alone.
  • Make noise and talk while on the trail.
  • Carry bear spray or a firearm.
  • Never run from a bear encounter.
  • Speak in a low monotone voice so the bear can tell you are human.
  • If a bear charges you, use your bear spray or firearm to defend yourself.
  • If the bear continues to charge you should lay down and play dead.
  • Lie on your stomach, clasp your hands behind your neck. Use your elbows and feet to avoid being rolled over by the bear. Protect your vitals as much as possible.
  • Do your best to remain silent and still. A surprised or defensive bear will usually stop attacking once it thinks the threat is gone.
  • Do not get up or move until you are sure the bear has left the area.
  • If a bear attack seems to be predatory and not defensive fight back.
  • Yell loudly, try to be scary, throw rocks and sticks if you can.
  • Make yourself look as large as possible, hold your arms out.
  • Try and drop items or gear out of your pack. Some items may distract the bear allowing you to back out of the area slowly.
