Utah has a number of leftover big game permits this year. Starting on July 16th at 8 a.m. the general season elk permits will go on sale. These elk permits are a great opportunity for hunters to fill their freezers during the fall. There are 15,000 any weapon spike bull permits as well as 15,000 any weapon any bull permits. Likewise, the state also offers unlimited general-season archery bull elk permits.

Due to COVID-19 concerns this year, the permits will be sold exclusively online. Anyone interested should go to the Utah DWR webpage, this will be the only way for a person to purchase a big game permit in Utah this year. Utah DWR officials would also like to remind hunters that they will not be able to enter DWR offices to purchase their licenses like before.

“An online queue will be used to ensure website stability. You will not be able to enter the queue until 8 a.m. on the respective sales days. Permits are still available on a first-come, first-served basis, and your place when you enter the queue will determine the order in which you will be allowed to purchase one. You must have a valid hunting license or combination license to purchase a permit.” -Utah DWR press realease

Leftover Deer Permits

General-season buck deer permits are also available for purchase. Starting at 8 a.m. on July 21st the buck deer permits will be able to be purchased via the same online queue system as the elk permits. The remaining 909 buck deer permits are all muzzleloader hunts running from Sept. 23–Oct. 1, 2020. The units with leftover permits are as follows.

  • DB1561 Box Elder: 57 permits.
  • DB1565 Chalk Creek/East Canyon/Morgan-South Rich: 564 permits.
  • DB1568 Kamas: 228 permits.
  • DB1586 Wasatch Mtns, West: 60 permits.

Utah also provides great opportunities for youth hunters. Subsequently, there are 3,250 youth archery-only buck deer permits available for purchase. These permits will go on sale at the same time as the other buck deer permits 8 a.m. on July 21st.

“If you happened to miss the big game drawing or were unsuccessful, this is your last opportunity to hunt big game this fall. Also, don’t forget that you can mentor a youth during these hunts, and it’s a great opportunity to pass on your love of the outdoors to the next generation.”-DWR Wildlife Licensing Coordinator Lindy Varney
