You may not have drawn a big game hunting permit this year. If that’s the case you better be ready on July 12th. Starting on July 12th, Utah will begin the sale of several different types of big game permits. However, the state has spread the sale of these permits over several different days. Below we will list each of the permits and what days those permits will go on sale.

Elk Permits

  • General-season archery elk permits:

General season archery elk permits are unlimited in Utah for both adults and youth hunters. Also, the sale of these permits will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12th.

  • General-season any bull elk permits:

The general-season bull elk permits allow hunters to harvest a bull elk using a muzzleloader or any legal weapon. These permits are also known as any bull permits. There will be 17,500 permits available for adult hunters. However, these permits are unlimited for youth hunters. Likewise, these permits will go on sale starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 14th.

  • General-season spike bull elk permits:

As stated above these permits are only for spike bull elk. There will be 15,000 permits available for hunters of any age, there are no youth-only spike bull permits. These permits will go on sale later than the others. They will go on sale at  8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26th.

Deer Permits

  • General-season buck deer permits:

These permits will be available beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19th. There are a total of 954 permits remaining.

  • Youth general-season archery deer permits:

These permits are set aside for youth hunters every year. These permits will also go on sale at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19th.

  • Limited-entry buck deer, pronghorn, and over-the-counter bison permits:

There is only one limited-entry buck deer and one limited-entry pronghorn permit available, but the Nine Mile hunting unit bison permits are unlimited. These permits will go on sale beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12th.

These permits can be purchased online or at any Utah DWR office. However, these permits are first come first serve, so you’ll want to be ready to go early the day they go on sale. Likewise, if you purchase them online, there will be an online waiting room that will tell you what place you are in line. The separating of these permit sales on different days has helped with some of the traffic issues that were experienced a few years ago. However, there will still be thousands of people online trying to get their permits. You can read more by clicking here. You can also read more Utah hunting news by clicking here.
