A man in Raton, New Mexico was out exercising his dogs when he was suddenly attacked by a bear. He was able to draw his sidearm and kill the bear but not before sustaining some fairly serious injuries. The individual was airlifted to the UNM Hospital where he would recover from his wounds.
Bears are unpredictable; the department has listed some ways in which you can practice precaution in bear country.
