RAMPART RANGE DEER MANAGEMENT PLAN – Over the last six years, the Rampart Range has been my backyard.  I’ve spent many of hours hiking, hunting, and enjoying this beautiful mountain range in the hills near Colorado Springs.  I’ve been able to watch many great deer on this range, and the future of this wonderful area is currently up for discussion for the CPW.

Rampart Range

The Rampart Range runs parallel with I-25 near Colorado Springs.  It is well known and lies just north of the famous Pikes Peak.

The recreational activities that the Rampart Range provides are many.  Fishermen enjoy the Rampart Range reservoir.  Motorcycle riders can ride for days on the trails across the range.  Hikers can pick a different trail for every day of the week and see things like Elephant Rock.  And hunters get the opportunity to pursue deer and elk that rival the quality of many other units in the state.

The endless supply of recreation that can take place on this unit also requires very specific management.

Public Comment Period

The CPW is currently accepting public comment on the management of the deer herd of the Rampart Range.  The goal of the management plan is to control population size, as well as buck to doe ratios.

The plan will determine decisions made for the next decade as it relates to the deer herd.  It will also impact “how many animals must be harvested to maintain or move toward the objectives.”  As well as “what types of hunting seasons are required to achieve the harvest objective.”

How to Complete the Survey

The survey can be completed online and can be completed here.  All surveys must be completed by May 31st, 2022.  The CPW will then take the data and comments, and then they will construct a plan that will be shared at a later date.
